Notes from the Nurse: Norma School

ISSUE 9 NORMA SCHOOL MAY 2008

MAY NEWS

Our School year is rapidly coming to a close. These last weeks will be very busy ones here at Norma School. The Trike-A-Thon will be held next week. Our children here at Norma School have been learning about bicycle safety. The classroom health lessons are going well. I hope you have been hearing about these at home. The current kindergarten students will also visit Olivet School. Roundup for new preschool and kindergarten students will be held on May 13. Please call the school office if interested. As April showers give way to May flowers please remember to update me on any adverse bee sting reactions that have occurred.

SUN PROTECTION

With the arrival of hot weather, many of us are spending a great deal of time outdoors. Most of us enjoy being outside, but exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays can be dangerous. The sun’s rays can damage the skin and can cause cancer later in life. Because 80% of the average person’s exposure to the sun occurs before the age of 18, it’s especially important that children are properly protected from the sun’s harmful rays-even on cloudy days. Here are a few suggestions to help protect you from the sun’s rays.

Use a sunscreen. SPF 15 or higher to block the most harmful rays. Wear a hat, sunglasses, loose fitting clothing. Keep out of the midday sun as much as possible. The suns rays are strongest and do the most damage between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. POISON IVY

Now that the weather is warmer and we are spending more time in parks and wooded areas, many of us are exposed to poison ivy. Poison ivy is an allergy to the oil found on the plant leaf. Eighty percent of people are very

allergic and will show symptoms of an itchy, blistery rash up to 48 hours after contact with the plant. Your best defense is avoidance. Learn to identify poison ivy and teach your children what to look for. The key characteristic is leaves that occur in groups of three with the center leaf stem longer than the other two.

Wash affected skin as soon as possible after contact with cold water to minimize any reaction and to prevent the spread of sap to other body parts. Calamine lotion offers relief of the itching. For those who are highly allergic to poison ivy, medical treatment may be necessary. Remember to watch your pets too; they can transfer the oil to you.

WARNING

Many well-meaning people have done it. On a hectic day of running errands, they’ve left the kids in the car for ‘just a minute’. It seems like a harmless thing to do.

In less than a minute, a child can climb out of a car seat and shift the car into gear. A minute is all it takes for a child to become ill from heat or car fumes. And it only takes a minute for someone to break into a vehicle and abduct a child.

Children’s health experts warn that when the outside temperature is only in the high 70’s, a closed automobile can heat up to 125 degrees within 15 minutes. Even with the windows opened, a small child can dehydrate within minutes. So, as we begin the summer season, make sure each time you take your keys from your car, take your children too. It only takes a minute!

SNEAKER COLLECTION

We have collected over 150 pairs of sneakers. Thank you to all those who have cleaned out closets and donated them to us. The sneakers will be taken to the Nike’s store in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia and then will be shipped off to the recycling center.
